Starting my path as an Allied Health Assistant, I was eager and optimistic. With a background in massage therapy and allied health, I felt prepared, having gained experience in the field. Little did Dorothy know, she wasn’t in Kansas anymore.

Lesson 1
Within the Capable Spaces Occupational Therapy world, people are called clients or participants, not patients. This terminology shift underscores the collaborative nature of the therapeutic relationship, emphasising empowerment and active involvement.
Coming from a role as a Physiotherapist assistant, I was accustomed to being very hands-on with patients. Initially, I anticipated a hands-on role, aiding clients with physical exercises and activities to enhance their mobility and physical well-being. I am part of a team dedicated to improving the overall quality of life for our clients, addressing their physical, emotional, and social needs.
In my role as an AHA, I assist our occupational therapists in various tasks, such as organising trial equipment, researching products, requesting quotes, creating documents, visiting clients, installing Assistive Technology, and much more.
Occupational therapy involves more than just individual assistance; it requires a collaborative effort. Our clinicians engage not only with the individuals but also with their families and support systems. This inclusive approach ensures that all support aspects are aligned. Each day presents new challenges and learning opportunities that broadens my understanding of occupational therapy. I quickly realised that my role extended beyond physical support.
Lesson 2
Occupational Therapists wear many hats and are skillful multitaskers. Sometimes they need to have 8 arms to juggle goals, expectations, assistive technology advancements, professional policies & guidelines, NDIS & Insurance changes, professional development, reports and so much more.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been witnessing the holistic progress in our clients. From helping a client with a SCI regain their independence in daily activities to assisting a client with Parkinsons access the community, the impact of our work is profound. Our interventions often involve creative solutions tailored to each person’s unique circumstances, making every success a shared win.
The collaborative nature of the job means that we also work closely with other healthcare professionals, learning from their expertise and contributing to our own insights. This interdisciplinary approach enriches our practice and fosters a supportive environment where everyone’s input is valued.
Understanding the struggles our clients face and offering consistent, compassionate support is crucial. It’s about celebrating small victories and helping them navigate setbacks with resilience.
Lesson 3
Listening! In all aspects of this role! For clients, recognising individual rights to freedom of expression, self-determination, and decision-making is key. Although this may appear obvious, it’s easy to overlook and prioritise our own agendas.
As I continue on this path, I am continually inspired by the resilience and determination of the individuals we serve. Their journeys remind me daily of the importance of our work and the positive impact we can have on people’s lives. This role has not only deepened my professional skills but has also enriched my appreciation for the power of collaborative, compassionate care.
I encourage anyone considering a career as an Allied Health Assistant to dive in with an open heart and mind. Embrace the unpredictability of the role, cherish the victories, and learn from the challenges. It’s a journey that promises not only professional growth but also personal fulfillment.
To those already in this field, remember the importance of self-care. The nature of our work can be emotionally demanding, and it’s vital to nurture our own well-being to continue providing the best support to others. Surround yourself with a strong support network, seek out mentorship, and never hesitate to share your experiences and seek advice.
Lesson 4
Have Fun! The individuals and team surrounding you play a crucial role. They help brighten the challenging days. Celebrate the unique personalities and stories of each client and team member you encounter. Embrace the joy that comes from making a difference, and find humour in the everyday moments. Whether it’s a shared laugh with a colleague or a simple smile from a client, these interactions build a positive atmosphere that fuels motivation and passion.
The journey as an Allied Health Assistant in Occupational Therapy is one of continuous discovery and profound impact. It’s a path filled with constant learning. Together, we can create a world where everyone has the opportunity to live their fullest, most independent lives.
