Karen Maurer Occupational Therapist

Karen Maurer
Karen is the Founder and Clinical Director of Capable Spaces. Karen has worked as a senior Occupational Therapist in both public and private health sectors across the Hunter region for more than 20 years.

Karen has extensive experience working with adults who have been diagnosed with neurological conditions, those who have experienced major trauma or brain injury and individuals who are facing palliative conditions. She also has a special interest in helping her clients navigate complex wheelchair situations.

With a great track record of helping clients get the essential items they need to live a fulfilling life, Karen confidently navigates the different requirements of funding agencies and finds solutions that work.

Keen to share her knowledge and skills with the next generation of Occupational Therapists, Karen also offers mentoring, supervision and training for new clinicians, particularly in the area of assistive technology. Using remote, online and face-to-face training methods, Karen is up-skilling occupational therapists across Australia.

In her spare time, Karen loves cooking, going to the gym, reading, learning, and drinking tea in local cafes. She enjoys meeting new people and always encourages people to believe in themselves and their abilities. Karen and her husband Sheldon live in Fletcher NSW with their two teenage daughters.

Karen Alexander
For over 17 years Karen has been working as an Occupational Therapist in the Hunter, working with people with disabilities to find creative ways to live their best life.

Karen is driven by a strong desire to help others. To do this, she draws on her skills, experience, product knowledge and a strong network of contacts she’s developed over the years.

As a Community Occupational Therapist in both the public and private sectors, Karen has mostly worked in senior positions as a Clinical Specialist. Her focus areas are home modifications and community-based spinal cord injury rehabilitation.

As a Clinical Specialist, Karen has strong skills in designing home modifications as well as prescribing equipment, from simple, low cost solutions through to more complex, expensive items. She’s found her niche at Capable Spaces, working with people in their own homes where they can truly be themselves.

Outside work, Karen loves to exercise and likes to rope people into doing crazy, exercise-based adventures with her. She lives with her partner, son and daughter. Karen gets a kick out of organising things, writing lists and trying to tick them off.

Lara Fox Occupational Therapist

Lara Fox
Lara has over 15 years’ experience as an Occupational Therapist, 12 of those years in senior clinical positions. She has travelled with her job, working in Sydney, London, Canberra, and more recently as a Community Occupational Therapist in the Hunter region for the past decade.

Lara is passionate about working with compassion and dedication to help others to get the most out of every day. Her specialist areas are with people experiencing chronic and neurodegenerative conditions and in provision of palliative care. She is driven by a desire to improve palliative care provided within our community, and works collaboratively with clients and their loved ones to provide support, training, equipment and advice as early as possible in the journey to help all involved live their best life.

When not at work, Lara is usually found at home in the garden or working on a home renovation project, with her husband, two girls, dog and 3 chooks. Lara is happiest with dirt on her hands, surrounded by plants and her family.
