Capable Spaces provides occupational therapy for adults with neurological conditions.
You are the expert of your own life. We’ll offer options and solutions to help you achieve your goals, but you make the final call. As your needs change, we’ll be flexible and responsive.
We will give you regular updates, turn up on time and let you know if we’re running late. We will treat you as a person and not a number in a queue.
We visit you in your own home- either in person or via Telehealth sessions- to find out how you want to live your life.
We listen to your story and learn what’s important to you. Once we know what you want to achieve, we’ll develop a customized solution and teach you how to get the most out of every opportunity.
We truly believe our work makes a difference. A big part of our role is encouraging you to believe in yourself and in your abilities.
You are stronger and more capable than you think. It’s incredible what you can do when you set your mind to it.
Karen is the Founder and Clinical Director of Capable Spaces. Karen has worked as a senior Occupational Therapist in both public and private health sectors across the Hunter region for more than 20 years.
For the last ten years Karen has worked with adults who have been diagnosed with neurological conditions, those who have experienced major trauma or brain injury and individuals who are facing palliative conditions. She also has a special interest in helping her clients navigate complex wheelchair situations.
With a great track record of helping clients get the essential items they need to live a fulfilling life, Karen confidently navigates the different requirements of funding agencies and finds solutions that work.
Keen to share her knowledge and skills with the next generation of Occupational Therapists, Karen also offers mentoring, supervision and training for new clinicians, particularly in the area of assistive technology. Using remote, online and face-to-face training methods, Karen is up-skilling occupational therapists across Australia.
In her spare time, Karen loves cooking, going to the gym, reading, learning, and drinking tea in local cafes. She enjoys meeting new people and always encourages people to believe in themselves and their abilities. Karen and her husband Sheldon live in Fletcher NSW with their two teenage daughters.
For over 17 years Karen has been working as an Occupational Therapist in the Hunter, working with people with disabilities to find creative ways to live their best life.
Karen is driven by a strong desire to help others. To do this, she draws on her skills, experience, product knowledge and a strong network of contacts she’s developed over the years.
As a Community Occupational Therapist in both the public and private sectors, Karen has mostly worked in senior positions as a Clinical Specialist. Her focus areas are home modifications and community-based spinal cord injury rehabilitation.
As a Clinical Specialist, Karen has strong skills in designing home modifications as well as prescribing equipment, from simple, low cost solutions through to more complex, expensive items. She’s found her niche at Capable Spaces, working with people in their own homes where they can truly be themselves.
Outside work, Karen loves to exercise and likes to rope people into doing crazy, exercise-based adventures with her. She lives with her partner, son and daughter. Karen gets a kick out of organising things, writing lists and trying to tick them off.
